Aseev-Zakharevich, Petersburg, 1995

Position after 18 ... Rad8.

The fight over e4 is balanced: White has three
defending pieces versus Black's three attackers.
Both sides can bring an extra man to bear on the
focal point: Re1 versus ... Re7 and ... Rde8.
White would dominate the center if he were able
to centralize the a1 rook as well. But, since
it's tied down to protecting the weak a5 pawn,
he cannot entertain such ambitions.
